Turn It! — A b/d Reversal and Spelling Activity

Turn It! transforms b/d letter discrimination into an engaging, hands-on spelling activity that gets students thinking, moving, and working with words.

Using one specially designed 2-inch white acrylic letter manipulative, students explore how a simple turn changes a lowercase b into a d.

Students begin by naming a picture and listening for the sounds in the word. They identify whether the word needs a b or d at the beginning or end, turn the manipulative to form the correct letter, and spell the entire word on a whiteboard or paper, saying each sound as they write.

Finally, they flip the card to reveal the correctly spelled word and check their work. Students can place the acrylic letter over the outlined letter on the card for an additional visual and tactile connection.

For a quicker activity, students can simply name the picture, identify the sound, turn the letter, and flip the card to check.

With words featuring b and d in both beginning and ending positions, Turn It! offers varied opportunities for meaningful spelling practice.

Step-by-step handwriting directions for forming lowercase b and d in both print and cursive are also included, providing additional opportunities to reinforce correct letter formation.

A Note About b/d Reversals
